Nohproblem Consulting: First Employee, Every Channel

Nohproblem Consulting is a Vancouver firm serving Korean newcomers to Canada - immigration, settlement, and the landing services around them. I joined as its first employee, hired as a marketer, and for a while I was the whole department: the website in four languages, video, search, social, and the landing services themselves.

The job that kept growing.

I was hired as a marketer, and the person I took over from had worked alone and left days later - so from the start, the job was whatever the company needed done. I began with blog posts. Soon I was finishing them in half an hour, and the days had widened: video editing, official documents, developing and managing the website in four languages, and looking after the landing services end to end - housing, cars, furniture, schools, driver's licences - meeting customers directly to handle them.

Every channel, one pair of hands.

The company's web presence ran in four languages - the website itself, the blog and the SNS channels - alongside a Daum Cafe community and a YouTube channel, and I ran them all. I grew the YouTube channel to its first 1,000 subscribers; the videos I produced there are still the channel's most-watched, with more than 500,000 views between them. Alongside, I edited and subtitled a CELPIP and IELTS lecture series for Teachable, so the teaching reached students before they ever landed.

The search results were the sharp edge.

On early-child-care (ECC) searches, Nohproblem's content filled the first page of both Naver and Google - and over time spread across the second and third pages too. The businesses promoted alongside us - an auto mall, telecom and moving services, schools - grew with that visibility into names Vancouver knows. Search was not one channel among many; it was the door everything else walked through.

What it left behind.

Years later, arranging a move of my own, I called one of the moving companies from those days - and they still remembered me by name. That is what the work was: a small company, one person holding every channel, and results that stayed after the person left.
